So am I missing something or are Candle (Pierre) and Faraday filming this present day and appealing to someone in the past to prevent the purge? If the purge wiped out Cheng and his colleagues, how is he able to make this film?

t.l.a. I viewed it as 1968 was the year it was filmed. And this is a transmission from the past.
I think the opposite, it was filmed 30 years ago and they're trying to keep this "pinhole" open into the future begging for the DI to regroup in the future to come and change the past; he uses GWB as proof of seeing into the future through the "pinhole".
This would explain Faraday's journal and certainly takes the idea of time travel into a whole new realm on Lost.
I need to rewatch, perhaps several times. :)
But if it was filmed 30 years ago wouldn't Faraday be a kid? I'm trying to reconcile what I just saw with how time travel has previously been handled on Lost and it's not easy ;)

OMG, I was wrong, "Pierre" says it would take 30 years for us to receive the transmission, GWB would be in office and we would be using "something called the internet". Keeping the "pinhole" open was needed so the transmission would travel in time so we WOULD receive it 30 years from the time it was recorded!!!???? AHHHHH

Pierre was getting ready to tell who his "credible source" was and then the Faraday-sound-alike said that "None of that matters. Just get to it. Please."
If that truly is Faraday, he is the source from the future who knows what happened to DHARMA, knows who the president of the future is, knows about the Internet, and has come back in time and informed Pierre of what's about to happen.
Why and how Faraday came back in time or proved himself to Cheng is the question though. Another question that comes to mind is, if that's Faraday, then why does Cheng keep wanting someone to change the past when Faraday (and Damon and Carlton for that matter) have said that the past and future can't be altered? Wouldn't Faraday correct him? Tell him to stop pleading because it's futile?
This video raises more questions than the Orchid video, IMO.
If it is Faraday, I am guessing that he may have been thrown into another time than the island because he was out on the boat. Or The whole island goes back 30 years.

I know in LALA land there are all kinds of impersonators, but that voice was one hell of impersonation of Jeremy Davies if it wasn't him; even it wasn't it was sure meant for us to think it was.
I think we had been told awhile back that Daniel would play a big role in the future of Lost, no? Personally, I had no doubt that the zodiac didn't get time warped with the island, but did it get warped to the same place and time as the island? I'd like to think Daniel is on island, he seem to have answers.

Anyway, i'm wondering the same thing as Christian above...especially with the comments by Darlton about us not knowing when or where we'll be when season 5 starts. Quite possible that though Daniel and the zodiac were moved with the island, it didn't move to the same place and time as the island...after all Ben didn't.
Faraday was in a similar situation to Desmond, his consciousness altering between island time and 30 years ago, Explaining how he could be filming candle in the past.
We know he was experincing something similar to Desmond because we found out that Des is his constant.
Also, I know Darlton said that the past/future cannot be altered... so how does one explain why Desmond spent the whole of Season 3 saving Charlies life?
@ stu - Desmond spent Season 3 trying to save Charlie's life because he thought he could. Even though Ms. Hawking had told him it was futile, he didn't believe her because he had prevented some of his visions from coming to fruition. However, we don't know if it was destiny that Desmond receive those visions of an alternate future that was never going to happen because fate knew Desmond would alter what he saw, or if Desmond only changed the when and how even though he couldn't change the what.
And Faraday is not experiencing something similar to Desmond here. If Faraday's conscious was teleported into his body 30 years in the past, he wouldn't have a man's voice (he might not even be born yet).
If that is actually Faraday's voice, then he has to have physically time traveled, unlike Desmond who's consciousness only traveled.
The only way Faraday could have physically time traveled is if he was sent back in time when the island disappeared, uses a repaired Orchid Station, or turns the frozen donkey wheel (which we know he didn't do because he appears to be on the island filming Cheng). There's also the possibility that this "pinhole" thing Cheng is talking about is a new method of time travel we're not aware of yet. Regardless, it's something different than what Desmond has done.
I hate to go against the flow of speculation, but are we SURE that the guy offscreen is Daniel Faraday? At first, it does indeed sound like him, but towards the end of the video, as the he says "how do you turn it off?" the accent changes a little bit. I hear a faint Brookyln accent that sounds a little different than Daniel's accent. I remember the sample Orchid video in which the cameraman sounded a lot like Richard, but his identity was proven inconsequential.
Regardless, the video is an awesome reveal! It looks like Season Five will be the DHARMA-centric season that we've awaited for quite some time. Maybe the island traveled back in time; hence, the Losties and Others might have a chance to change what happened to DHARMA. The time-travel aspect may tie-in heavily to Jacob. It may also allow the telling of Rousseau's story.
I really hope this video is a predictor of things to come in Season Five and not just a useless filler.

That's exactly what I was going to say. Hate to dispel the speculation, but that's a New Yawk accent. Not Faraday, just a guy with a high-pitched voice.

Anyhow, this video justified what I have said frequently, and I will say again. I have always believed that Darlton are lying about the fact that time can be changed.
The whole END of the show is going to be about time changing... about changing the past... and allowing some of the great stories to come back together (Charlie & Claire?)
Thats been my theory for a while and this video has made me feel much more confident about it.
I didn't hear him asking anyone to change the past. He's telling people what happened in the past, and asking people to continue his work in the future.
Also, I'm not sure that was Faraday. It COULD be Faraday, but it could just as easily be someone else.
Having watched this video a few more times, I've made some observations and drawn some conclusions:
Before revealing his real name, Cheng says "there's no point in games anymore right?" which suggests this was filmed after his series of Dharma orientation films in which he used a series of aliases. (Something which could be considered playing games). "If you're watching this now, you already know that my name, my real name is Pierre Cheng" indicates that his intended viewer will already know his real name.
After claiming "I've one chance at this" Pierre says "I was brought to *inaudible* (God forsaken?) island years ago to conduct experiments.." Since he will later express enthusiasm about the island's 'properties', the possible 'God forsaken' description could indicate that life on said island is less than safe or pleasant. Hostiles? Smokey? He grows impatient with the sound of a baby crying nearby and tells someone in no uncertain terms to "take him outside!" All we can take from this is that the baby is male. And Pierre is irritable.
"If I can keep this pinhole open long enough, you should be receiving my message roughly 30 years.." (another convenient yet irritating break in transmission) is followed by several facts about the present day. "The American President is a man named George W. Bush" and "You share digital information instantaneously on something called internet" suggests the viewer will be familiar with these facts, (even if Pierre's delivery suggests that he certainly isn't) and that his message is for the benefit of someone living within the age of the internet and within the age of George W. Bush's presidency (A period spanning from the year 2001 to the present day). I believe this is offered as proof of his knowledge of the future and probably meant to add credence to what he reveals next; details of the purge which he claims his colleagues and he are apparently powerless to escape. 'Apparently' is the key word here. It suggests that Pierre has been informed of those events but since he is obviously alive and well in this video, he is yet to experience them. This puts the time of filming before the purge and raises an intriguing question: If Cheng knows it's going to happen, can and will he try to prevent it? His pessimistic tone suggests he's resigned to his fate. A momentary glance at his left arm suggests the 'source' mentioned in his next sentence may have given Pierre even more details to worry about. Incidentally, at 1:53 in the video there is a slight pan which brings a shape into view in the bottom left of the screen that could be mistaken for a person with long red hair although I suspect it's an object of some kind.
"This information comes to me from a source that has proven himself to be credible" confirms two things. The person who informs Cheng of the purge is male and has gone some way to proving his credibility. It is directly after this line that the person conducting the filming begins interrupting. (Someone I still believe sounds eerily similar to Daniel Faraday but I'm no expert on regional American accents) I get the impression that said 'source' and the person behind that voice are one and the same.
"Regardless, if this transmission is successful, it's proof the work I have been doing here is valid" is a very interesting statement. 'Here' is the clincher regarding his location. He's on the island. The nature of the 'work' Cheng has been doing (as seen in the Orchid orientation film) involves (for lack of a more appropriate term) time travel. There are two possibilities here: either the message will utilise 'time travel' on it's way to being 'transmitted', or the fact that Pierre knows details about the future vindicates his work. I believe his knowledge of the future was imparted to him by his mysterious source and since that could hardly be attributed to his own efforts, I think the former is most likely.
"This place, it has extraordinary properties" is further evidence that he is on the island at the time of filming. ('This') Cheng signs off with a plea for the Dharma Initiative to be 'reconstituted' and stresses the importance of finishing what they started. "Time is not just of the essence...time is the essence" ranks as one of the most interesting things this guy has ever said, not to mention the catchiest. 'Time is of the essence' generally means that speed is essential and indicates a deadline. Valenzetti equation anyone? Could Dharma be hellbent on preventing human extinction, even after their own?
From all this I conclude, albeit with less than full confidence, that the video was shot on the island (possibly at the barracks. That sofa and bookshelf have a familiar look) some time between 1971 and 1978, 21 or 14 years before the purge respectively. Pierre is aware, through a source that he trusts, that the purge will happen. It has to be assumed that this source is actually from the future as he has also related details consistent with at the very earliest, the year 2001. Assuming this source is the impatient individual behind the camera, (and it is an assumption on my part) then we have heard the voice of someone who more than likely belongs in the present day yet finds themselves on the island in the 1970's. Cheng seems to have accepted the deaths of his colleagues and himself as an inevitability and the main purpose of the video seems to be a plea to put the Dharma Initiative back into action. He anticipates a 30 year passage of time between himself and the recipient of his message. I believe that to be 30 years in the future rather than the past and suggest a date between 2001 and the present day.
I definitely see red hair on the left side of the frame for a bit at about 55 secs in, also Pierre has two working arms!
I do think it's clever that they gave the character a name similar to the actors:

I agree that this is not the same as Desmond's flashes; Desmond's "time travel" was in his head. It appears that Daniel and the zodiac (and perhaps the entire island) have travelled back in time 30 years). I will have to say upon watching to this video and then the one with just the audio, that the voice is absolutely that of Daniel Faraday, his voice always had odd inflections to it if you think about it. Now...if Daniel has travelled back in time 30 years, one would think he would need his Constant.
Just remember this conversation from TNPLH part 1:
" HURLEY: Well, if you could move the island whenever you wanted, why didn't you just move it before the psychos with guns got here?
BEN: Because doing it is both dangerous and unpredictable. It's a measure of last resort."
Unpredictable, the theories have been that the island only moved a short distance FORWARD in time. I don't know if anyone considered that "unpredictable" could have meant that island travelled 30 years BACK in time.
I interpreted the question about the "boaties" meaning that the "boaties" already on the freighter were dead, not the ones still on the zodiac with Faraday. I could be wrong, but...
Darlton talking about us not knowing when or where we'll be when the show returns absolutely makes me believe that island has moved way back in time. We'll see Rousseau but not in any FB or FW form; then the only way for that to happen is for her to be alive.
there's no reason to include the part with a baby unless it's a hint; we only know of two babies...aaron and sun's child; possibly a hint
or charlotte as a baby, perhaps daniel takes her off the island in the past to save her from the purge
at 3:19 in the second video it sounds like he says "you have to stop Richard Alperts experiments"
i dont think there asking to change the past, he seemed like he knew the inevitable was going to happen, but there trying to get dharma back to its reseach present day, to stop something from happening in the future.
there trying to prevent some catastrophy in the future and it has something to do with the reasearch on the island, which has been going on since the at least the 70s, but it was ended by ben with the purge, pierre is trying to say that the research must continue or else......? is ben trying to destroy the world by ending dharmas experiments? is dhamra really the good guys?
heavy on the time though... its obvously faraday with him, informing him of the future, im guessing charlotte was born on the island in the past and ended up in the future with dan somehow, so, the island went back in time, explaining how they will tell danielles story, dharmas story, the lslands story, and possibly part of the reason locke is now dead, he had to move the island again to get the island in the right time frame so that the oceanic six can get back, dieing somehow in the process

Maybe the island was sent back 30 years. The losties on the island were sent back as well with all of the original Dharma workers before the Purge. Ben was ejected because he was already on the island as a boy. This could possibly be why Jack can't get back to the island because he is already on it. The reason Locke is off the island now is because he had to move it again to avoid the purge.

When we saw Jack talking to the person in the shower, it sounded exactly like Juliet, but ended up being Kate!
Seeing the person with red hair in the lower left corner proves there is more than one person out of view. Could it be 2 different people talking? First Faraday, then another?
Also, the first person to interrupts is on the left of the camera and Pierre looks right at him, also the volume of the voice suggests that he is also further away than the camera man who says “It doesn’t matter, just get to it…PLEASE”

I agree that Pierre was asking for them to resume the research or actually “have it reconstituted”, which is an interesting word to use. He also did say “and perhaps find a way to save us” giving the impression that the future purge may not be inevitable and perhaps even incorrect and is suggesting that continuing the research may be times way of self correcting.
The name Pierre is french, but the name Chau is oriental (not sure of the exact origin). I find this an interesting mix with Rousseau and Sun’s ethnicity.
The person who has the baby…whether he is hers or not…is Jennifer. Not sure if this name is someone we have met/heard of already or not (the women in the picture in Bens house maybe?). Also, was the baby born on the island, proving that women could, at one time, have children on the island? Or was the women pregnant, like Clair when she got there? Or was the baby brought there after he was born.
Could be nothing…but the baby starts crying (interrupting?) just as Pierre begins to tell the truth (or stops playing games!).

There is not doubt that he said “you have to stop…” and …”you can’t let him…” So SOMEONE (a male) has to be stopped. That leaves no doubt that someone has to be stopped. So, who exactly is the person responsible for stopping Darma? Was it Richard, Ben, Sun or Penny’s father, Henry Gale??? Whoever it was, that seems to be the person who needs to be stopped.

Pierre does refer to the woman in the video as "Lara", i've found confirmation of this. It's been bothering me that people keep saying it's "Jennifer" so I went on a hunt to find out otherwise. I see you must have as well...Lara it is! :)
